PCA To Host Seminar on Bridge Design Specs

Bridge engineers will be able to participate in a seminar on AASHTO LRFD Specifications on Sept. 16 at PCA headquarters in Skokie. The seminar is particularly timely because all bridges receiving federal funding must now be designed using AASHTO’s load factor and resistance design (LRFD) bridge design specifications.

The seminar will provide an understanding of the background of the LRFD specifications, an overview of the state-of-the-art procedures and design examples that will help engineers in applying the latest provisions. Emphasis will be placed on the unified method of design for reinforced and prestressed concrete, shear design utilizing modified compression field theory and strut-and-tie modeling. Design examples for deck design, pier cap design and precast, prestressed concrete girder dedesign highlighting the key steps in LRFD will also be presented.

Each attendee will receive seminar notes, including design examples as well as PCA publications AASHTO LRFD Strut-and-Tie Model Design Examples and LRFD Design of Cast-In-Place Concrete Bridges – a $135 value. Participants will also receive 0.75 CEUs (7.5 PDHs) upon completion of the seminar.
